Sir Thomas Beecham, born St Helen's , Lancashire 1879. Heir to the Beecham's Pills millions - spent family money on strengthening opera in London - founder of the LPO and the RPO. One of the first British conductors to gain international fame - a noted wit. Died in London on 8th March 1961.

Nominations for Committee may be made at any time up to the election of Committee in the AGM agenda. If you would like to nominate anybody, make sure that you have their permission and a seconder.

Zubin Mehta - born Bombay in 1936 -won the Liverpool International Conductors Competition in 1958. Worked with the Montreal SO (1960-7) The Los Angeles PO (1962-77). From 1977 was Music Director of the Israel PO, and from 1978 of the New York PO. I saw him conduct the Liverpool PO in Rochdale Town Hall in 1958.

Sir Malcolm Sargent - born Ashford, Kent in 1895 - originally an organist - made his conducting debut at a Prom Concert in 1921. An outstanding choral conductor much associated with the Huddersfield Choral Society and the Messiah, and of course the Proms. Nicknamed 'Flash' by Beecham. Died in London 3rd October 1967.
