Committee Member Profile

Thelma Shaw

Thelma is something of a polymath and music is the flip side of her interest as her qualifications are in the sciences and education. She began her professional life as a nurse at UCH, London. After 10 years as a housewife and mother of two children she became a presenter, interviewer and newsreader with Anglia TV. Later, she began teaching science and became Senior Tutor at Ashford School, Kent. In 1980 she began her publishing career as a science journalist in South Africa, editing scientific and technical magazines with leading publishing houses.
In 1989 she returned to England to take up a position as Managing Editor and Language Editor of technical documents for a firm of aviation consultants until she retired in 1995.
(Thelma began her editorship of the FRMS Bulletin in 1993 as Thelma Mills but changed her name when she and Vice-President Roderick Shaw married in 1999).
